Turkey Teeth: What the Phrase Actually Means

The phrase gets used loosely and it obscures the thing that actually matters, which is how much healthy tooth is removed.

You will have seen the phrase. It turns up in headlines, in comment sections and occasionally in our waiting room, usually said half as a joke by somebody who is quietly worried.

It is worth unpicking, because the phrase is doing a lot of work and most of it is misleading. The issue it points at is real. The country in the name is not the cause of it.

Where it came from

The phrase attached itself to a particular look: a full set of very white, very uniform, very opaque front teeth, often noticeably larger than the ones they replaced. It became shorthand for cosmetic dentistry that has been overdone.

That look is not produced by geography. It is produced by a treatment choice, and the same choice made in London produces the same result.

Crowns and veneers are not the same thing

This is the distinction that matters and it is the one that gets lost.

A veneer is a thin facing bonded to the front of a tooth. Preparing a tooth for one removes a small amount of enamel, and in some cases almost none.

A crown covers the whole tooth. Preparing a tooth for one means reducing it substantially on every surface, taking away a significant proportion of the natural tooth structure underneath.

Much of the work that gets called veneers is in fact crowns. The word used in the marketing is often not the word that describes the procedure.

Why healthy teeth end up being reduced

Crowning a tooth gives more control over its final shape and shade. If somebody wants a dramatic change quickly, across many teeth, crowns will deliver it, and they will deliver it in a shorter number of visits than aligning the teeth first and then working conservatively.

The cost of that speed is paid in tooth structure, and it is not recoverable. A tooth that has been reduced for a crown stays reduced. Over the years the crown will need replacing, and each replacement is another intervention on a tooth that has less of itself left each time. Some of those teeth will eventually need root canal treatment.

None of that means crowns are wrong. They are the right answer for a tooth that is heavily broken down or already root treated. It is a question of whether the tooth needed it.

What a considered plan tends to look like

Where a patient wants a change in their smile, the sequence we would usually work through starts with the least invasive option that achieves the goal.

Whitening first, because it sets the shade everything else will be matched to. Then alignment, if the teeth are not where they should be, because moving a tooth is preferable to reshaping it. Then bonding or veneers on the teeth that still need them. Crowns where a tooth is genuinely compromised.

That takes longer. It usually costs less over a lifetime, because you keep more of your own teeth.

Turkey is not the problem

There is excellent dentistry in Türkiye, and there is careless dentistry in the United Kingdom. What distinguishes them is not the passport of the person holding the drill. It is whether the plan was built around what your mouth needs or around what could be sold and delivered inside a week.

The warning signs are the same wherever you are. A quote before an examination. The same treatment recommended to everybody. Pressure to decide quickly. A plan that involves preparing a large number of healthy teeth. Photographs of results that all look identical.
