Modern clear aligners change the conversation completely. They are nearly invisible, removable for meals and brushing, and digitally planned from day one so you can see your projected smile before committing. How clear aligners actually work

Aligners are a series of custom made, near invisible trays that fit precisely over your teeth. Each tray applies controlled, gentle pressure to move specific teeth in a planned direction. You wear each set typically for 22 hours a day, removing them only to eat, drink hot drinks and clean. After roughly two weeks you swap to the next set, and so on through the planned series. Over time, the small, predictable movements add up to a beautifully aligned smile.

Why patients prefer dentist led aligners

You may have seen mail order aligner subscriptions advertised online. We are deliberately the opposite: every aligner case at Abbeywood Dental Practice is planned and supervised by a GDC registered dentist who sees you in person. That matters because moving teeth is a clinical procedure, not a retail one. We check the health of your teeth and gums first, look at the bite as a whole, plan around any existing crowns or fillings, and adjust the plan if your teeth respond differently to predictions. The result is safer, more predictable and easier to refine if life throws a wobble at it halfway through.

Living with your aligners day to day

The first few days of a new set feel slightly tight, that is the tray doing its job. By day three, that fades and the aligners feel like part of your routine. Remove them for meals and hot drinks (cold water is fine), brush them with cool water, and pop them back in. Carry a slim aligner case in your bag for restaurants. You will quickly settle into a rhythm.

After alignment, protecting the result

Teeth have a memory, so retention matters. Most patients wear a thin, clear retainer at night to keep their newly aligned smile in place long term. Many also pair their finished aligner result with professional whitening for a fresher overall finish, or a fuller smile design plan.
